“Make Her Say” by Kid Cudi, Kanye West and Common

I still cannot believe that Kid Cudi went straight from the near-genius of “Day N Nite” to this in the space of just one single. If this doesn’t set the record for the fastest sellout move in the history of professional music, I don’t think I want to know what does. For those who don’t know, this song samples Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” for the sake of a cringe-inducing pun about blowjobs. It’s especially sad because prior to this, Cudi had seemed like the most interesting new rapper to reach the mainstream in years. Granted, his next single, “Pursuit of Happiness” represented a temporary return to his fresh-from-the-underground depth and introspection (even featuring two acclaimed Indie bands as guest artists), and he would even release one more solid album in 2010. But the damage was done, and his reputation never fully recovered from this, leading to the downward spiral that would make him the punchline he is today.

Verdict: Bad
